This is because Windows screen readers introduce new access paradigms which do not always match what is displayed visually. Windows screen readers offer several modes to allow a user to review and interact with web content. Successfully using a screen reader on the web requires the user to be able to determine which mode is currently active, the operation paradigm for each mode, and how to switch modes as required.
Developers also need to be cognizant of the screen reader modes used for accessing different types of content and the effect that their code will have on the user experience if a particular mode is used. This is the default mode that is invoked when a page loads in the browser.
In document mode, the user is interacting with a cached copy of the web page. The screen reader stores a copy of the page and allows the user to traverse it as if it were a word processing document.
This is accomplished by providing the user with an invisible cursor which is free to roam the document by the same units of text that would be available in a word processing application: characters, words, lines, paragraphs, etc.
This allows a user to move the virtual cursor outside the range of the content currently being displayed on-screen. Window-Eyes does show a visual indicator of its invisible document navigation cursor. Document mode usually provides commands for selecting text by these same units for manipulation as well. There are several advantages to document mode access. The primary advantage is that the invisible cursor can move to content which is not keyboard-focusable.
This allows for review of content contained in between elements which receive keyboard focus. As keyboard focus is usually only provided to operable controls such as hyperlinks and form fields, text in between these elements can easily be accessed while document mode is active. In addition to allowing users to navigate by units of text, most modern screen readers provide keystrokes within document mode to navigate by web page elements. Screen readers usually provide a mechanism to navigate to the next subsequent heading element on a page, and also to navigate to a designated heading level.
The numbered keystrokes are commonly used to navigate by a specific heading level e. Table navigation commands are usually provided in document mode as well. These commands allow the user to navigate between cells within a table and traverse the table by row or column.
This is usually the mode where the announcement of the relationship between table headers and data cells by the screen reader occurs as well. Finally, many screen readers provide additional features in document mode to locate text such as searching for text strings, jumping to a specific line number or setting invisible place markers on the page.
Similarly, the cursor arrow keys get intercepted as well and repurposed to move the document cursor around on the web page. This poses a problem when keyboard access is being provided by a website using keystrokes that get intercepted by the screen reader with document mode active if the user would normally access the site using this mode. Another area where document mode can pose challenges is with respect to portions of a web page that update dynamically without initiating a server-side refresh.
This is the reason that client-side content changes can create problems for users of screen readers.When many people think of web accessibility, they primarily imagine screen reader users.
However, as the SOAP site demonstrates extensively, these are not the only users who have accessibility needs when using the web or online applications. In fact, though statistics regarding screen reader use not to mention specific screen readers used are difficult to come by, those who use screen readers are a relatively small population.
Note, by the way, that not all screen reader users are blind; others with print-reading disabilities may also find screen readers useful. Despite limited information about this audience, keep in mind that code does make a significant difference to screen reading software.
For example, it is ideal to use the button element, rather than a link that looks like a button. And, as another example, it is best to code lists correctly, instead of implementing incorrect markup such as perhaps a span or divand then including images of bullets to create the appearance of a list. Whenever possible, it will be faster, and easier, for you to use visual tools to check for as many accessibility issues as you can.
You will receive the most return on your time investment if you test with a screen reader when your code is the best you can make it.
By that point, for example, you will know that you've included all necessary alt attributes on images, and you can spare yourself from having to listen to a screen reader speak gibberish-sounding filenames for missing alt text. In most cases, testing with a screen reader should be a "double check" of your work. It is ideal to observe frequent users of screen readers since someone who starts a screen reader for the first time and who doesn't need to use one will not be familiar with approaches that typical screen reader users employ.

Once you become familiar with the screen reader, and have learned the general keyboard commands you need, too, try turning off your monitor and putting away your mouse. Developers are responsible for making their code the best it can be.

Before you begin to test with specific screen reader and browser combinations, you will want to have a basic understanding of how screen readers work. Want to learn how to use Narrator to do things in Office apps, like Outlook and Word? Narrator can now read next, current, and previous sentences. You can use these new commands on Braille displays by pressing dots or in command input mode. Each level is documented in Chapter 4 with a brief description of how you might want to use it. The updated layout is more like the keyboard layout you may have experienced in other screen readers.
For some commands, you can now use the numeric keypad. You can explore all the new and updated commands in Appendix B: Narrator keyboard commands and touch gestures. Find scan mode commands in Chapter 3: Using scan mode. New Narrator commands will not be available in the Legacy keyboard layout if keystrokes for legacy commands conflict with those used in new Narrator features.
Open Narrator settings. You can now choose what modifier key you want to use in Narrator commands. Both the Caps Lock and Insert keys serve as your Narrator key by default.
